Today, I felt a need write about a very controversial and misunderstood subject based on my experiences and what I have learned – Is college a rip off or scam? We will discuss that, and I also put an excellent “ABC 20/20″ video right below here on this as well that you need to watch now. First of all, I want to say that I went to college, I want my future kids to go to college, and I do recommend people go to college! But, and this is a BIG but – it also depends on what your “goals” are from going to college. You NEED to learn the truth on what college will give you, and will NOT give you. That’s what this article is about, and I want to help you learn the truth.
Is college great?
Yes it is! I’m glad I went to college and got my bachelors degree in nursing. I loved the college experience, the education, and glad it got me the the nursing job to get me started in life. I’ve made some great lifetime friends, some who are almost like family to me now too. But is college the answer to your success in life like many people have been taught all their lives? Depending on what your “goals” are, college can either be great, or a rip off.
Is college a rip off or scam?
Yes, it can be, for a lot people. Many factors come into why this is so, and you will learn what some of them are in the video right below, and in the rest of my article below that as well.
Most of us are taught since early on that you MUST go to college to become “successful.” Colleges with expensive tuitions recruit heavily in the high schools, and encourage students to go get those huge student loans that can go as high as the 6-figure mark, with no promise or guarantee that it can be paid back in a reasonable amount of time after (and IF) they graduate. A lot of students will have high balances on their student loans until they are 50-60 years of age. With the economy the way it is, and inflation rising, they are struggling.
So is college right for you?
Well, again, it all depends on your “goals.” What do you want out of it, and what do you want you future to be like? What do you want to major in, and is there a need and a job for it after you graduate?
Colleges and “degrees” are supposed to help prepare people for “jobs” after they graduate (if they graduate). And depending on the ”degree” or what they major in, a job will either be very hard to get, or a little easier. And with the down economy we are in today, a lot of jobs are very hard to get, or sometimes even impossible in their chosen career path.
But there is NO GUARANTEE that a college degree will get the graduate a JOB. So after building up tens of thousands of dollars in student loan debt, the poor college graduate is stuck worrying about how he or she is going to pay it off and will end up paying student loan debt until maybe 50-60 years of age. Can you imagine if colleges give money-back guarantees? Now, that would be something to see! Most would go broke!
So, is college a rip of or scam? Well, you decide. Please give me any comments or feedback on this. I would love to hear your thoughts. A lot of expensive colleges recruit students with promises of high-paying jobs and a great life. They have the poor student go out and take on huge student loan debt, making it seem very easy to pay it back after they graduate and get a high-paying JOB. When my future kids go to college, I won’t have them take on any student loans. Their college tuition, whatever it costs, will be paid ALL CASH!
Do you have the cash available to do that as well for your kids? Come work with me, and I will teach you how to create a 6-figure income from home with NO college degree, part-time. For less than you would pay for school books, you can invest in a home-business that will reward you like no college degree or job can. CLICK HERE, or visit my “Work With Ryan” section at the top to learn how I can possibly help you.
Again, please leave me your comments or feedback. I want to hear about how you feel about college debt, good or bad. I wold love to hear about your positive or negative experiences with college, the promise it offers, and the debt you may have collected.
To your massive success,

Hi Ryan,
You certainly took on a challenge with this post. Sounds like you’ve got a tiger by the tail! We know there a lot of colleges with political and moral agendas, large and well known universities. They make little or no effort to cover up the fact that grades or even admission are contingent on sticking with the “party line” Colleges like that can’t be anything but a ripoff. Good luck with your kids and schooling them!

Yeah Lou, I see so many people (including myself) with huge student loans. So many of them are worried about paying them off after they graduate, or not. College is great. But they don’t teach you”financial education” there. They mostly teach you how to get a job, if you can even get a good one these days.

Excellent thought provoking post Ryan!
I’m all about PASSION when it comes to a career. I have nothing against a formal education but I think you did a great job highlighting the risks. I think that if someone who is going to college is doing it because they have a passion and desire for that particular field, then so be it!
If not, I think its a good idea to explore alternative options, especially in this ever changing world we live in today.
There are so many factors to think about ( which you very well put in this post) We must help others “think outside” the box and explore ALL options!!

Love the premise of this post and have used the topic in several papers and public presentations.
The American Public has bee SOLD a bill of Goods by selfish “Illuminati”, who possess a desire to build Pal;aces and Financial legacies, with NO thought of providing the guidance and thought provoking atmosphere.
I decided to go to college, paid my own way, earned a BS, with No loans (working full time while carrying 20-24 units per semester) to study a field of science that required my being associated with those who had mastered the fields.
There are truly VERY few Vocations today that NEED advanced knowledge. What is NEEDED is the infusion of learning HOW TO THINK and APPLY ACTION to the process. and that can be learned in Secondary schools with well managed curricula and staffed by Professional.
I always enjoyed my Father’s take on “College”. He quit high school to learn the common sense needed to CREATE economic entities that could provide jobs for PhDs.
I interview College graduates often and they have learned nothing of Life Skills, How to Cipher, Manage Finance, and undersatand HOW TO communicate.
I feel sorry for their disillusionment and Empty Pockets sets. Their Time in many instances would have been better pent working at a trade and learning practical values

Aloha Ryan, great post and college is debatable. I think if they restructure the classes and focus directly on the courses that is needed to get the degree and get rid of all the electives that cost and if you don’t pass it you have to repeat it. So maybe trade schools are better to attend. I would want my kids to go to school but maybe a trade school rather than college. Glad I came by and thanks for sharing. Mahalo, Lani
